Smutylo Law+ is an Ottawa business law practice at 150 Elgin Street, led by Koby Smutylo, who was called to the Ontario bar in 2001. The work is corporate and commercial: incorporations and shareholder agreements, contract review, buying and selling businesses, and owners who need to part ways. Most matters are quoted at a fixed fee before work starts.
Owner-managed businesses, founders and early-stage companies, professionals, and the consultants and contractors who work with them — in Ottawa and across Ontario. The practice also acts for US companies that need Canadian counsel.
The practice serves businesses across Ottawa — Centretown, the Glebe, the ByWard Market, Westboro, Kanata, Nepean, Barrhaven and Orléans — and across Ontario.
Koby Smutylo was called to the Bar of Ontario in 2001 and has practised business law for more than 25 years — in private practice in Ottawa, as Senior Corporate Counsel at Corel, and as in-house counsel to public and private companies, including as General Counsel of HEXO. He has trained in mediation, which shapes how he approaches disputes between business owners. See about Koby Smutylo.
Smutylo Law+ does not take on court litigation, criminal law, real estate conveyancing or personal injury matters. If your matter falls outside the practice, you will be told on the first call.
At Smutylo Law+, most business matters — incorporations, contract reviews, shareholder agreements, smaller purchases and sales — are quoted at a fixed fee after a free 20-minute call. Where no fixed fee is quoted, the published hourly rate applies. You receive the quote in writing before any work starts.

The terms overlap. “Corporate lawyer” usually refers to work on the corporation itself — incorporation, shares, governance, mergers and acquisitions. “Business lawyer” is broader and includes the commercial contracts the business runs on. Smutylo Law+ does both.
